God’s Ways Are To Be My Ways

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! (Psalm 139:23-24 ESV)
There are a lot of people out there in the world who oppose God and will dispute what God says in His word. We see that every day now in whatever political debate is the hot topic of the day. Politicians will cherry pick verses in the Bible that support their cause, then try to twist it to show that God is on their side in whatever the debate of the day happens to be. It is always best to read the verses before and after whatever verse we want to use to make sure we understand it in context. David said people disputing God’s word are wicked, violent liars, blasphemers and rebels.
Since God knows our every thought and deed, David is asking here for God to search him and test him. David is asking God for revelation of any need of correction. Believers can be sure that God is aware of our every need and has already prepared the help we require. The plan God has for our lives includes tests to strengthen our faith, but He will never let us fail if we live in obedience to Him.
David asked God to reveal any words, thoughts or actions in him that were offensive to God. He asked to be led in God’s way. Believers can be ignorant of sins in their lives if they are unfamiliar with God’s Word or lack sensitivity because of spiritual immaturity. We should constantly be praying for God to help us be aware of any sinful attitudes and actions that are offensive to Him.
We must be cautious as we examine ourselves because we do not even know our own hearts. Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” We all know that verse and what it says is true. It is best to open the Word and let the Spirit search us and speak for us so that we can discover the truth. We do not need to dispute God, for He loves us and only wants the best for us. When we read the next verse in Jeremiah 17:10 “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.” We see that God is the ultimate and final Judge. Every life is important to God; let’s make them important to us also.
