Why does it seem that evil is spreading and growing?

Because it is! A quick look at the news we can rightly assume that evil is spreading around the country and the world. School shootings are phenomena that have exploded in occurrences. People have many ideas about what causes this and how to fix the problem. Many will blame the gun, or the availability of the guns, while others blame the gun free zones. There is a portion of people that blame the accessibility into the school building, while another group blames the mental health of the shooter.

The Basic Cause of Evil

In the Baker encyclopedia of Christian apologetics (BECA) Theists distinguish between the primary cause of a free action (God) and the secondary cause (a human being).

God has given the power of choice, but God is not responsible for the exercise of that choice to do evil. In so much that God does not perform the act like a puppet master is in charge of his puppets, this is of man’s doing and action, he alone is responsible. A person could say that God is responsible for the possibility of evil, but we must bear the responsibility for the actuality of it. Through scripture and theology, we know that God neither wills it to be done. God does, however, allow evil to be committed but He is not the author or creator of it.

Where Does Evil Come From?

The heart!

Jeremiah 17:9–10 and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Romans 1:28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

Man’s heart and flesh completely go against the nature of God because of the fall. The sources of evil are the creation and free will. Both are made good but we have the ability and freedom to choose what path we are going to take. The unfortunate result is creatures using this good power to bring evil into the world by rebelling against God, their Creator. The rise of evil is indirect, not directly through the abuse of a good power – freedom. Freedom in itself is not bad, but with freedom comes the possibility of evil. Rust on a car is a perfect example. A car is a good invention, but without the proper care, rust begins to form, deteriorating the car. Rust was not part of the creation but a result from improper use, care, and attention. (maintenance)

The Spread of Evil

Why does it seem that evil is spreading and growing?

Jesus warns that we are to be aware of the teachings around us in Matthew 16:6 (Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”) Jesus is not talking about bread but what happens with the yeast inside the lump. Evil, false teachings and sin multiply when care is not given.  Rust begins to form on a car because of the lack of maintenance and care of that car. Evil comes into a life because of the lack of maintenance and care in a life and then spreads. A life with no good in it lacks as existence. A totally rusted car is not a car at all but a pile of desecrated metal. A moth-eaten garment is nothing but a hangar in a closet. Destruction spreads if the proper care is not maintained. Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 5:6 (that a little leaven leavens the whole lump.)

Because of the growth and spread of evil, lawlessness will spread Matthew 24:12 and the love of many will grow cold. The light of love in one’s heart will grow dim and dark with sin. Yeast makes the bread rise and infiltrates the entire lump. Hate, gossip, and sin are the active ingredients of evil. Just as gossip travels faster than truth, evil grows unbridled and contaminates our society.

Jesus taught in Matthew 10:24–25 (“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household?) that the students learn from the teacher. Since the society has removed or changed the definition of truth, what are they learning? The culture now teaches that it is whatever makes you happy. What is true for one may not be true for another. It is a self-gratification, needs-based line that continues to move. Until we get back to a God-centered, morality based set of facts and truths. Evil will continue to grow.
